Woven from the intersecting visions of a conductor, a sound thinker—composer and musicologist—and a production manager, the reflections offered in this book delve into the intimacy and aura of this bold orchestral formation. More specifically, Dare! A Poetics of the Orchestra presents original perspectives, questioning current modes of interpretation and dissemination of the symphonic repertoire. It also proposes new paths to rethink musical commitment today, the relationship to the work, the ritual of the concert, and the very act of “making orchestra.”

Daniel Kawka, conductor
An invitation to travel through the sounds of habaneras and guajiras… This major orchestral evening features two masterpieces: Rapsodie espagnole by Maurice Ravel, a composer passionate about Iberian music, with its sensual, mesmerizing, and shimmering colors; and Nights in the Gardens of Spain, a symphonic poem of great formal beauty written for orchestra and piano by Manuel de Falla.
Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI
Daniel Kawka, conductor
Lise Berthaud, viola
Who better than the Orchestra Nazionale della RAI to embody this evening inspired by Italy? On this occasion, the orchestra reunites with conductor Daniel Kawka, renowned for his interpretations of Romantic and modern music, and a regular guest with this leading symphonic ensemble. Imbued with deeply Romantic themes of travel, disappointment, and triumph, the program opens with the Overture to Benvenuto Cellini, whose success stands in stark contrast to the failure of the opera at its 1838 premiere. It would later be rescued by Franz Liszt, a close friend and passionate champion of Berlioz’s work.
